Country: Brazil
Genre: Avant-Garde, Electronica
Territories : Spain, UK, Ireland
“More interesting than Morcheeba, more curious than Beth Orton” Mojo
“An audacious record… adding elements of nu-jazz and pop psychedelia to the
dazzling mix…” The Times
“Thrilling: light and easy on the ear, but full of ideas… It’s simultaneously like
nothing on earth and everything you’ve heard before. This summer, the sound of
Cibelle will be percolating out of every hip coffee bar, lounge and clothes shop”
The Independent
“It’s wonderfully refreshing to find intelligence and unconventionality worn so
lightly and sunnily. This is iced mint tea for the ears.” Daily Telegraph
Cibelle (pronounced “See-bell-ee”) is one
of the most seductively original artists on
the contemporary music scene. Singer,
composer, poet, video artist… Cibelle is
chameleon-like in her ability to change her
music’s subtle directions as well as her
appearance.
Her distinctive voice was first heard on Sao
Paulo Confessions, the groundbreaking
album by Yugoslav producer Suba, who
had fled his nation’s wars and followed his
love of Brazilian music to Sao Paulo. There
he set about applying a contemporary,
electronic mindset to his productions and
upon hearing Cibelle singing in a local bar,
invited her to work with him. With its clever
blend of bossa-nova and electronica, the
resulting album caused a huge impact on

Brazilian music and is considered the
sparking point in the digital explosion that
rocked Brazilian music in the early 2000s.
After Suba’s death in a tragic accident in
1999, Cibelle moved to Europe. Her selftitled
debut album was released in 2003,
and immediately established her as one of
the most imaginative young artists to come
out of Brazil. Glowing reviews followed, as
well as a nomination for Best Newcomer at
the 2004 BBC World Music Awards.
Her sound can be described as enigmatic
and utterly Brazilian yet, in the same
breath, it can then be said that nobody else
sounds quite like her. Comparisons have
been made with Björk, Nina Simone,
Morcheeba and Beth Orton but there are
always those elusive elements of Cibelle’s
music that go beyond such similarities.
Building on the success and critical acclaim
of her debut, the second album “The Shine
of Dried Electric Leaves” goes even further
down this inventive path, incorporating a
rich palette of instruments with captivating
textural soundscapes, bursts of electronica
and enchanting storytelling. It was recorded
and produced by Cibelle in collaboration
with co-producers Mike Lindsay (Tunng),
Apollo Nove (who produced her debut
album) and Yann Arnaud (Air). The album
features duets with Seu Jorge (of ‘City Of
God’ and ‘The Life Aquatic’ fame), human
beatboxer Spleen and Devendra Banhart.
Cibelle’s combination of the bossa-nova
sound with a more experimental approach
to making music has opened up seemingly
limitless possibilities. Within weeks of the
release of the single “Green Grass” in late
2007, the beautifully crafted video that
accompanied the song had accumulated
almost half a million hits on YouTube.
